ECHO PORTICO OR "HEPTAECHOS" (middle of the 4th cent. B.C)

Echo portico

Famous building for its acoustics, where the sound was repeated seven times.
It consisted of an outer doric colonnade and an inner ionic one.
It was also known as "Poikile" (Painted Portico) because of its interior fresco decoration.
In front of the portico was erected the monument of Ptolemy II Philadelphus and of Arsinoe
(284 - 246 B.C.).
Their gild statues once crowned the two Ionic columns of 10 m. hight.
